The Momentum Map™ is the habit-building tool at the heart of Mastery™.

Your Roadmap from Knowing to Doing to Mastery

The Momentum Map is grounded in improvement science, deliberate practice, and habit formation research, it gives you a focused, repeatable structure for the work of becoming the teacher your students need — one small, deliberate step at a time.

The Cycle

Five steps. One repeating cycle. Lasting change.

  • Build your understanding of one topic that matters to your practice right now. Curate your own Learning Playlist™ — articles, books, podcasts, conference sessions, coaching conversations — and return to it as you practice. Even ten minutes of focused learning helps make deliberate practice more meaningful.

  • Name one specific teaching move, set a clear goal, and decide what progress will look like for your students and for you.

  • One focused teaching move: small enough to do every lesson, meaningful enough to matter, and anchored to a routine you already trust.

  • A few honest sentences after a lesson: what you tried, what happened, what you noticed in your students. Reflection is how a single attempt becomes a pattern you can learn from.

  • At the end of your practice window, step back and decide whether to continue, adjust, or replace the teaching move — let your students' work tell you which one. This is where small adjustments result in improved practice.

Why it Works

Built on how teaching expertise actually develops.

Teaching expertise isn't built through years of experience alone; it's built through deliberate, focused practice over time.

That practice has four components: a specific goal, sustained attention, clear feedback, and refinement based on what you notice. The Momentum Map™ is built around those four parts, drawing on improvement science, deliberate practice, and habit formation.

The students who most need expert teachers — students without strong background knowledge, students from historically underserved communities — depend on instruction precisely designed to help every student actually process, retain, and apply what they're learning. They are also the students who lose the most when that expertise is missing from the room.

That kind of teaching doesn't happen by accident; it happens because teachers commit to becoming experts at it. The Momentum Map™ is a structure for that commitment.
